CHARLES TRÉNET (1913-2001)

Charles Trénet the world famous French songwriter, singer, poet and artist. He wrote the legendary songs: ‘La Mer’ (Beyond the Sea) and ‘Boum!’

We were delighted to source and acquire this rare and exceptional self-portrait work, which is also signed by him.

The James Bond Skyfall movie Song; ‘Boum!’ is performed by Charles Trenet.
It is featured in the soundtrack of the highly dramatic scene of when James Bond (Daniel Craig) is captured and meets the villain Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem).

Charles Trenet was most famous for his recordings from the late 1930s until the mid-1950s, though his career continued through the 1990s.

In an era in which it was exceptional for a singer to write his or her own material, Trenet wrote prolifically and declined to record any but his own songs.

His best known songs include ‘La Mer’ and ‘Boum!’ His catalogue of songs number over a thousand.

His song ‘La Mer’, which according to legend he composed with Léo Chauliac on a train in 1943, was recorded in 1946. Trenet explained in an interview that he was told that La Mer was not swing enough to be a hit, and for this reason it sat in a drawer for three years before being recorded.
